Dangers of ticks to pets

What ticks can transmit to pets

  • Dogs:
    • Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) → fever, lameness, swollen joints; chronic cases can affect kidneys. Infected ticks generally must be attached >24 hours (often 36–48h) to transmit—so quick removal matters.
    • Anaplasmosis & Ehrlichiosis → lethargy, fever, low platelets (bruising/bleeding). CAPC maps track where positives are trending up.
  • Cats:
    • Cytauxzoonosis (Cytauxzoon felis) in parts of the South/Midwest can be rapidly fatal without prompt treatment; published reports place acute mortality around ~40% even with care, and “nearly all” untreated cases can be fatal.

How pets get tick-bitten (and how to spot it)

Ticks quest on grasses, brush, leaf litter, and even well-kept yards frequented by wildlife. After outdoor time, check your pet’s:

  • Ears (inside and behind), around eyes/muzzle, under collar, between toes, armpits/groin, and tail base.
Daily checks—especially in spring through fall—are a core CDC recommendation.
